Meet the Staff 2018 - Ben
Meet the Staff 2018!
Camp Talooli has one of the greatest summer staffs around. With about 80% of our staff returning this year, our staff members are incredibly skilled, innovative, and enthusiastic about sharing their love of summer camp with Talooli campers.
Position at Camp this summer:
How many years have you been coming to Camp Talooli?
13 years! Ben was a Talooli camper and CIT before becoming a counselor. This will be his first summer working as our Nature Director.
Tell us about your job this summer.
I will be the Nature Director, the role I most idolized and my favorite activity as a camper. From catching insects to long nature hikes, my scientific young mind loved nothing more than to be in the slower paced, fun, and educational nature program. The most exciting and challenging parts I see with this posiyion are the near endless possibilities with it!
What is your favorite thing a camper has ever said to you?
"Ben, we found an ant queen in the bottom of the boat and we picked it up like you said! It was drowing...please, you have to save it!!!" This is funny to me as I quite love ants and would talk about them in depth if the kids pressed, which then invites myself to be teased in a friendly manner. One of my female campers both asked the most questions and did the most teasing. I found it funny, because she actually took what I said to heart.
What is your favorite Disney movie?
What type of career are you currently pursuing?
Environmental resource engineering. Ben will be a freshman at SUNY ESF in the fall.
What are you most looking forward to about this summer?
Being the man and in the role that I used to look up to when I went to Camp as a child.
Are there certain things that your friends/family just "don't get" about your love for Camp Talooli?
My friends do not get it at all. They ask why I would stay out in the woods all week, dealing with kids 24/7. I work at Camp Talooli because it is my place. It is where my family is. It is where my best memories are. Are kids a handful? Yeah, of course they are. However, like anyone else, they are seeking happy memories and good experiences, the same that I remember wanting as a kid. Why wouldn't I want to give back to the next generation? It is a job where I don't have to force energy, enthusiasm, or a smile...it's all in the work.
